Over the last few days I took some snapshots of some of the websites me and my team have designed recently. As a New Orleans based Web Site Designer, it’s been a pleasure to watch my clients web projects and ideas come to life.

One of the trademarks of my site work is using the Content Management System (CMS) called Wordpress.  Wordpress is a software system that allows the end user to maintain, add, and update his/her content on the fly without touching the web’s design or structure.

This makes Wordpress idea for web site design work both in New Orleans and beyond. Additionally, Wordpress does great in the search engines, allows you to spread your content via Real Simple Syndication (RSS), and makes adding audio and video to your site an easy task.

To date, we’ve designed and managed web projects in New Orleans, San Francisco, New York City, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia.

So, being on-site is no limitation.  Distance is not an obstacle when building a web project as long as we lay out the goals and expectations from the beginning. Sure, sometimes these goals and expectations change, shift, and evolve.  This is expected. Clear communication at every step of the way is the goal on both my end and you – the client’s end.

Some businesses are still using the Yellow Pages.  No offense, but who’s looking at the Yellow Pages. Additionally, the Yellow Pages has undertaken an interesting campaign.

They’re actually encouraging their clients to create videos with them – see here http://www.youtube.com/yellowpages. This tells me that even the Yellow Pages recognizes the benefit of video.  And they know if they don’t get to their existing customer base now, someone else, LIKE ME , will get to them first.

You see, the yellow pages is dead, but most businesses don’t know where else to advertise.  So, the Yellow Pages is counting on its existing customers or new customers looking for video to

Although I think this is a decent start – looking at the Youtube channel, there’s no way I would find any business I’m looking for going through the over 12000 videos to-date listed on the Youtube channel.

The Yellow Pages is providing a cutting edge service, but still using an old business model.

I’ve created a great new service many of my clients have been taking advantage of and using to dominate the search engines.

What should you be videoing in your  business?  Almost anything goes.  Make it relevant, informative, and engaging. It doesn’t matter what your business or service or message is.  And it won’t take long to find something worth documenting.

Here are a few examples of what to video:

• Client testimonials – let your best customers, become your instant sales force.  People will believe what others say about you more readily than what you say about yourself
• Product Demonstrations - Train and presell your potential clients on your most popular services just by talking about them. Often, our potential clients don’t know the full range and depth of our services because we haven’t taken the time to tell them.
• Frequently Asked Questions – Do you get the same questions from clients?  Why not answer questions that you often get. Anticipate rejections you might get and give great reasons to convince your potential client that you’re the best person for the job.
• Comment on industry news – You will appear more in-tune and knowledgeable in your market if you can talk about what’s happening around you.  Are you in real estate or marketing?  Why not talk about what’s happening in your local real estate market or new marketing ideas and trends.

The bottom line is this – finding ways to use video and documenting around you can be easy and fun.  use your imagination and get started.

Who can use video for their business?  I would venture to say everyone. It doesn’t matter what your business or service or message is.  Everyone can find a way to use video inexpensively and simply. You don’t have to use Oscar winning video equipment or have access to excellent sound.  The internet audience and your potential clients are very forgiving.

Perhaps you are promoting an upcoming performance.  Why not use video to get the word out.  Have some of the cast talk about their roles in the performance.  Get your potential audience involved and engaged with the cast of the show before it even hits the stage. Get testimonials from the last show perhaps in a different city or get some folks to attend a dress rehearsal.

How much should you be paying for video production in your business?

It doesn’t have to cost alot, but you can spend a pretty penny depending on the amount of resources you use and your own skill set.

Here are just a few idea:

At a very minimum, you can simply take pictures of your business in action – you, your staff, your office, you consulting, happy clients, etc. You name it.

Then, create a slideshow of these pictures and add text to give potential clients information about your business.  This is a very inexpensive yet effective way to market your business with video.

Additionally, you probably have all the tools you need right now on our laptop or desktop computer whether you have a Mac or PC.

If you’ve got a little more cash to invest, grab a Flip camera and start shooting. It CAN be that easy. The Flip Video Mino Series Camcorder is the latest in the Flip camera series and does HD.  I have the original Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder and it has served me well.

The Flip is great for customer and client testimonials, on the fly video messages and even recording activities out and about.  You can really push the limits of the flip and use it for anything.

Depending on your message, you may want to edit the footage for the flip, but that’s for a discussion on another day. Editing can be a fairly easy task as long as we remember to K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Sweetie)

Lastly, you can always hire someone to do a professional shoot of you and your business. Refer back to our other Video Your Business Series post here on What You Should Video.
This will require planning and coordination, but if the video person knows what their doing, you can really do a lot with just an hours worth of video footage.

It’s important to not only shoot good video but know how to edit it for your short attention spanned internet audience and  potential clients and properly distribute your finished videos across the internet for the maximum amount of exposure.

A big part of maintaining one’s website is continuing to add relevant content that your clients and prospects will find useful and relevant.  Each site I set up is ready to go with editing by you – the client.  There’s no need to call (although you are always welcome to or learn html code or programming.  You are in the driver’s seat from the beginnig.

If you can update a Microsoft document, you have 98% of the skills you need to maintain your own website.  Deanne and I went over some of the basics during our visit.  Here she talks about the process.

Many of my clients have asked for the capability to add events to their site, let clients schedule themselves for appointments, and even sync their schedule to their smart phone. Using Google Calendar, which can be searchable in Google’s search engine and accessed privately or publicly made for a good solution.

Google Calendar is easily edited and can be used with 3rd party programs like Jott while on the go. Here is the first tutorial on how you can set-up and add a google calendar to your existing blog or site.

Business Blogging has become the latest craze in the small business community. And with good reason.
